Data navigation techniques are illustrated in this outliner table that organizes information hierarchically. Starting from a single initial point in a data network--in this case a database of supply requirements for a military logistics exercise--the user can select from a set of alternative dimensions along which he or she may drill down. Selecting Subordinate Units, it is revealed that the starting point (ARMY CORPS) was a concept consisting of five (5) military units.
These units have a number of attributes in the database. Clicking on a column heading in the outliner permits the selection of any available attribute for display in that column. In this case, we will display total required supply weight in column 2 and echelon level in column 3.
The Visage user interface has two basic object types:
- graphical elements
Elements are visual representations of concepts in the database, e.g., blocks of text, points on a graph, and icons. In general, the user can manipulate elements directly.
- frames
Frames are scripted objects that contain and apply constraints to elements. The outliner is an example of a frame for organizing and displaying elements in a textual or tabular form.
